The City of Rye, NY is seriously considering a deer slaughter, or 'cull,' which will be funded with taxpayer money. The excuses for this disgrace have gone from deer 'eating the plants' to the current 'destroying the entire coastline' - but Rye is a coastal city, prone to flooding; the NYC coastline has undergone major flooding - with no deer in sight.
~ Culling is very costly to taxpayers: One venue was persuaded to spend almost one MILLION dollars - and was deemed a failure.
~ Rye has admitted that deer/car collisions are far less than they thought.
~ They stated they will use baiting - which not only is unethical but also draws in other deer from surrounding areas. One proponent specifically requested that children be enlisted to help the cull.
INTEREST IN HUNTING IS DECLINING AND THE DEC KNOWS IT - SO THEY AND THEIR SUPPORTERS PUSH THE 'MYTH' OF DEER 'OVERPOPULATION' - WITH KILLING BEING THE 'SOLUTION.' In fact its PEOPLE who are overpopulated - currently over 8 BILLON of us and adding 8 million per year; it's people who cause 'deforestation' by cutting down trees for housing, roads, shopping centers etc; Rye needs to stop scapegoating deer for the issues we cause. It is appalling that, in 2026, we still even consider killing our way out of supposed 'problems.' PLEASE POLITELY REQUEST RYE OFFICIALS AVOID POINTLESS, CRUEL 'CULLING' IN FAVOR OF EDUCATING RYE RESIDENTS ON ALL HUMANE ALTERNATIVES - AND HOW TO LIVE PEACEFULLY WITH THEIR WILDLIFE NEIGHBORS.
