Letters The Tragedy of Barbaro To the Editor: The tragedy of Barbaro raises the issue of breeding pressures for
racehorses: they must be both light of bone, and strong. Does this create creatures whose bones cannot withstand the force of
their stride? I wonder whether these accidents are more frequent now than in the past.
I know of no other animals in which superb healthy specimens break their
bones simply from running. I hope that someone will investigate this. Perhaps this kind of horror
could be prevented by changing breeding practices. Megan Adams San Francisco, May 22, 2006
