David Michaels INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS According to an article in the Orlando Sentinel, SeaWorld has requested a settlement with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) over the February 24 death of trainer Dawn Brancheau, who was killed by an orca. SeaWorld's motive is clear: A settlement would bring a halt to OSHA's ongoing investigation of the incident before the federal agency reveals that SeaWorld knew and willfully ignored the danger that killer whales pose to its trainers. There have been dozens of incidents in which trainers have been killed, hospitalized, or seriously injured by "killer whales" at SeaWorld facilities. Following a 2006 attack by an orca on a trainer at SeaWorld in San Diego, the California Division of OSHA concluded that it was "only a matter of time" before someone was killed, but the agency withdrew its findings following pressure from SeaWorld. Please immediately contact Dr. David Michaels, OSHA's assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. Ask him to reject any proposal for a settlement with SeaWorld, complete the ongoing OSHA investigation of SeaWorld, and pursue all appropriate charges against the corporation. Thank you for everything you do for animals! |
