ACTION

Last week the Florida Legislature approved a state budget for 2020-21. Tucked into the budget is a $1.5 million gift to a caviar producer in Bascom, Florida.

At Sturgeon Aquafarms, more than 40,000 sturgeon are confined inside 100 tanks. The large, slow-growing fish spend years swimming endless circles before the females reach maturity. They are then cut open and their eggs removed to be sold as caviar.

Gov. DeSantis has the power to veto specific items in the budget. Please contact the governor and urge him to veto state funding for Sturgeon Aquafarms.

A simple message is all that is needed, such as:

"As a Florida resident, I urge you to use your line-item veto power to reject Specific Appropriation 1867A ($1,500,000) for "Bascom Farms/Sturgeon Aquafarms" that has been included in the 2020-21 budget. Please do not spend the public's money in support of a for-profit luxury good producer with a Madison Avenue storefront!"
