I am working on a concept that could
be presented to homeowner's associa-
tions and rental communities, and wondered if anyone knew of a similar
program anywhere else in the country. In brief, the concept would
promote
responsible pet ownership by welcoming sterilized, micro-chipped
companion
animals that are safely confined to the owner's residence. The program
would
include:
* a public education component on
- the importance of spaying and neutering
- the horrors of dumping/abandoning animals
- the futility of eradication programs
* a recommendation that a committee of volunteers work
to sterilize and adopt
or release abandoned animals (assuming there is a food source)
* modifications to all lease agreements that stipulate
animals must be sterilized
(or require a significantly higher deposit for unsterilized animals) and
recommend identification through microchips
* emergency "Save our Animals" stickers that list
animals in residence
* promotion kit for community to encourage/increase
marketability of property
due to "responsible pet community" status
I welcome any suggestions you might have, and would
appreciate any referrals
to other programs of which you are aware. If anyone else is interested
in working
on this with me, please let me know.
