Herring Gull
(Larus argentatus smithsonianus)

At one time or another you can find Herring Gulls in just about any part of North America, but as a breeding species they tend to be found in more northern regions, or at higher elevations in the west. They are also found across Eurasia. I painted the North American subspecies, from sketches done at Presqu’ile Provincial Park, near Brighton, Ontario.

This painting was done in acrylics on compressed hardboard, and shows a breeding pair, at a nest amid some rocks and driftwood.
