Toronto city councillors overwhelmingly approved (38-4!) a ban on the ownership, sale or consumption of shark fin.

The brutal practice of "finning" satisfies a vanity-food demand and is so widespread (an estimated 90 million sharks are killed each year) that it is pushing several species toward rapid extinction.
