Help Animals India
December 2013

India is a land of intense contrasts. Sublime beauty and joy coexist side by side with endless heartache and tears. Though ahimsa (the ethic of harmlessness) is well-accepted in Indian culture, it seldom translates into compassionate behavior towards animals. The result is a country teeming with homeless, starving, abused, sick or injured street animals, from dogs and cats to not-so-sacred cows.

We hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits this holiday season. We are so grateful for your donations to India's animals that have funded so many great activities.

Help Animals India is dedicated to helping those who walk the talk of ahimsa: the dedicated shelter workers, the fearless animal advocates and other groups and individuals who bring healing, security, comfort and dignity to India's animals every day.

What your donations accomplished in 2013:

  • The construction of a new dog sanctuary by VSPCA.
  • The rescue by Animal Nepal of donkeys being worked to death by bricklayers.
  • A first: the opening by Tibetan Volunteers for Animals of a veterinary clinic in the Tibetan refugee community of South India.
  • Disaster relief this June for the victims of the "Himalayan Tsunami" and progress toward a better future for the surviving horses, mules and donkeys who already faced a very hard life as draught animals.
  • Disaster relief in October for animal victims of Cyclone Phailin which struck the coast of the Bay of Bengal where VSPCA and Action for the Protection of Wild Animals (APOWA) are located.
  • Spaying and neutering street dogs and the construction of a shelter at HOPE and Animal Trust in Ranchi.
  • Grants to improve infrastructure and help cover operating expenses for People for Animals in several locations throughout India.
  • The "Plastic Cow" project of the Karuna Society for Animals and Nature and VSPCA. This project involves rescuing street cows and surgically removing the dangerous residue of plastic bags they inadvertently consume while scavenging garbage for food. The dense plastic residue accumulates in their intestines and threatens their lives.
  • Caring for abandoned animals and spaying/neutering dogs in the impoverished state of Bihar, thanks to the MAITRI Trust in Bodhgaya.
  • Support for the sweet rescued temple elephant, Menaka, and the elephant project of Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA) in Bangalore.
  • Billboards such as the one shown below - think of the change for society that we can make with more of these educating the public to spay/neuter; adopt dogs instead of breeding them; and report animal abuse.
