Tragic News for New Jersey's Bears

Dear friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I must report to you that the lawsuit filed to stop the bear hunt has failed, and the hunt will go on.

I wish I did not have to write this, but could instead bring you happier news. There were forces at work, however, that belied all good conscience and ethics, and there is no question that this hunt is happening because of one man - DEP Commissioner Brad Campbell - and his rage that he is not going to be re-appointed by the incoming Governor. We can at least be thankful that Campbell will no longer hold any position of authority in our state, but that is little comfort for those who will pay the price for his disdain; the bears did nothing wrong, and they don't deserve what is going to happen.

Though it is never easy to be faced with a hunt such as this, we must, of course, fight on. During the Civil War, when Ulysses S. Grant began his campaign against Robert E. Lee, and suffered terrible losses, he neither retreated nor walked away, but instead marched forward to the next battle. This left a strong impression on me and I have followed his lead as best as I have been able; when we lose a battle, such as this, we press on to the next fight. This is what we did after the hunt in 2003, and it was because of all our actions that there was no hunt the following year.

We are now moving forward with the 'Wounded Bear Rescue Teams,' which will be active for the duration of the hunt. Starting Monday, we will have people walking through the woods looking solely for wounded bears.

If anyone wants to be involved with this, please let me know.

This is not the first defeat we have faced, nor will it be the last. I cannot promise you much, but can give you this; we will never stop fighting for animals, and one day we celebrate when the hunting ideology is demolished by the weight of it's own brutality.
