Dear Animal Advocates:
Once again, Union County officials are "responding" to
wildlife presence in parks and golf courses through wide scale killing --
this time by gassing 2,700 geese. Now. Today. Please read the Star-Ledger
article, below.
Simply put, county officials in charge of parks are
pro-kill, pro-fish and game. USDA's Wildlife Services (formerly the
notorious Animal Damage Control), which re-tooled for suburban work a few
years ago by ordering CO2 portable gas chambers, actually describes itself
as a business.
Employees are paid though kill contracts like the
$20,000 agreement in Union County. USDA in effect advertises the service
and agitates for kills by describing the birds as a "health-threat." All
in-house, all very effective.
CO2 causes breathing so rapid it becomes unbearable.
Three geese are stuffed into the boxes at a time. Non-lethal alternatives,
including lasers, dog decoys with moving parts, exist. GeesePeace, from
Washington D.C., is nationally known for successfully using integrated
non-lethal techniques to lessen goose and human conflict. They should
immediately be asked to step in in Union County.
Please channel your outrage into action. The U.S. Senate
controls funding for USDA. New Jersey's two senators, especially the
powerful John Corzine, can indeed bring pressure to bear to stop this
killing. Now.
Please call, e-mail or fax their offices TODAY. Many
thanks. And please let us know of any responses. Please keep your message
short and succinct:
Stop the gassing in Union County/non-lethal alternatives
exist. Thanks. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. LIVES CAN BE SAVED -- PLEASE PHONE,
E-MAIL OR FAX.
