A Wichita man was taken to the hospital Saturday with a
gunshot wound after a hunting accident in southwest Harvey County.
Herbert H. Rea, 67, sustained wounds to his face, the
Harvey County sheriff's office reported.
About 5 p.m. Saturday, Rea was hunting with a group of
friends in a field near Southwest 84th and Spring Lake Road. A line of six
hunters walked the field while Rea was "blocking" possible pheasant,
keeping the birds from scattering.
According to a sheriff's office report, nine pheasant were
spooked into the air about 50 yards from Rea. The six hunters opened fire.
Rea was struck in the face with a round from a .12 gauge shotgun. He was
taken to Wesley Medical Center. A report on his condition today was
unavailable.
