STEAMBOAT: A Roseburg man is in stable condition at a
Eugene hospital after he was accidentally shot by a friend while hunting
near Steamboat on Friday.
Tyrell C. McCool, 20, was driving a vehicle about 10 miles
outside of Steamboat with three other hunters when a quail flew across the
road around 9:40 a.m., according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
McCool stopped the vehicle so they could pursue the bird,
and a passenger in the back, 20-year-old Rodger Akins of Roseburg, started
to hand forward a 20-gauge shotgun. As he did, the gun fired, hitting McCool
in the upper left shoulder.
The hunters drove McCool down the mountain and called for
help. He was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene. The
accident is under investigation.
