A 51-year-old rural Bluford woman is dead following a hunting
accident on her property in northeast Jefferson County. Jefferson
County Coroner Roger Mulch identifies the victim as Cynthia Mefford of
Moonbeam Lane.
The sheriff confirms Mefford was apparently shot by an 18-year-old
male relative visiting from out of town.
The two along, with another out of town relative, were fixing a
fence, but had taken their shotguns along in case they saw a deer.
Deputy Coroner Denny Litton says when the 18-year-old saw a deer, he
fired once and missed. As he was firing a second shot, Mefford
apparently stood up in front of him at the same time and was hit.
The 18-year-old has not yet been questioned because he was taken to
St. Mary's/Good Samaritan Hospital where he was sedated following the
incident. Mulch says the initial investigation reveals Mefford was the
victim of a tragic hunting accident, with no foul play suspected.
An investigation is continuing by the Jefferson County Sheriff's
office, Jefferson County Coroner and Illinois State Police.
