Dispatch Staff Report

CARROLTON, Ala. - A Wednesday hunting accident in Pickens County, Ala., left one man dead and another in jail.

Pickens County authorities responded to Hargrove Road, approximately eight miles north of Gordo, Ala., Wednesday afternoon to find Brandon Ellis Booth, 23, of 17431 Kellytown Road in Elrod, Ala., with a gunshot wound to the back.

He was pronounced dead on the scene, and his body was turned over to the Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

Booth's cousin John Lucas Kelly, 23, of 6065 County Road 57 in Gordo, Ala., was found with the body and was arrested on charges of hunting without permission and hunting in an abated field.

Authorities report Kelly has changed his story numerous times, but they believe Kelly tripped and accidentally shot Booth.

Kelly is being held in the Pickens County Jail on the hunting charges with a bond of $1,000.

Authorities are awaiting confirmation from the Pickens County Grand Jury before Kelly is tried on charges related to the shooting.
