One killed in Sampson County hunting accident
Garland, N.C. — A Benson man was killed in a Christmas Eve hunting
accident on a Sampson County hunting reserve, authorities said Monday.
Edward Allen Raynor Jr., 28, was with a group hunting deer on private
property about 3 miles outside of Garland when he was shot and killed by
Sanford Walter Smith, a member of the same hunting party, at about 2 p.m.
Dec. 24, said Sgt. Andrew Waldrop of the state Wildlife Resources
Commission.
Waldrop said the shooting remains under investigation, and officers plan
to meet with local prosecutors to determine whether any criminal charges are
warranted in the case.
