Boat capsized, companion rescued
Maryland Natural Resources Police and Charles County divers found
the body of a missing duck hunter from Mechanicsville at midday
Friday in the Potomac River, the day after a boat he was in capsized
and fire and rescue volunteers rescued his companion.
The body of 30-year-old Charles F. Burroughs was recovered not
far from where the boat overturned offshore from Indian Head in
Charles County, according to natural resources police.
Burroughs and Nicholas Beall, 24, of Charlotte Hall were duck
hunting Thursday near Mason’s Neck Refuge and were returning to Fort
Smallwood State Park at dusk when they encountered strong winds and
choppy waters that sank the boat. They called 911, and Beall was
rescued as he swam toward shore. A search for Burroughs continued
through the night until the divers located him at about 12:30 p.m.
Friday, using side-scan sonar equipment.
