December 11, 2013

HOPATCONG — A hunter was found on the ground below his tree stand in the woods – and he later died after being pulled out of the forest, police said.
The 66-year-old man was hunting on a private piece of property off Lackawanna Trail in Byram some three-fourths of a mile into the woods in Hopatcong, said Lt. Thomas Kmetz of the Hopatcong police.
A family member of the hunter called the property owner because night had fallen and the man had still not returned, Kmetz said.
The property owner followed the hunter’s footprints into the woods – and found the hunter on the ground underneath the tree stand, the lieutenant said.
