Hunter charged with illegal weapon possession

MONTICELLO - A Melville, Long Island man was arrested Sunday during a deer road check on Route 17B in Monticello for illegally possession a weapon.

Monticello Police stopped Joseph Moder, 43, for illegally taking a doe in a protected area. When officers conducted a criminal background check, they learned he was barred from possessing a rifle due to a 1998 conviction for felony DWI in Suffolk County.

Moder was charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. He was released on $200 bail. The doe he illegally took was confiscated by state DEC Police and his hunting rifle was confiscated by Monticello Police.
