We have an animal ministry and a green ministry, vegan members and vegan choices at potlucks
In about 2005, some of our members organized a viewing of PEACEABLE
KINGDOM: THE JOURNEY HOME. The film explores the awakening conscience of
several people who grew up in traditional farming culture and who have now
come to question the basic premises of their inherited way of life,
particularly the ‘factory farming’ and slaughter of animals.
Due in great part to this event, many people in our congregation were moved
to consider our own “inherited way of life”—and of eating. Several of us
became vegan or vegetarian and almost everyone started including more
meat-free meals.
It has not always been a comfortable dialogue but we keep having it.
Since 2005 the middle ground for our potlucks has shifted to vegetarian with
more vegan options all the time. Along with other Unitarian Universalists
around the country we engaged in a year-long study of food and faith and the
multifaceted ethics of eating. About once a year we print a vegan recipe
collection around a seasonal theme, like” Peace and Thanksgiving”, “Whole
Earth Picnic” and Peace on Earth, Good Cookies to All”. (When we figure out
how we’ll put them on our website!)
Toward the end of every summer we have an animal blessing service which
seeks not only to bless our animal companions, but to acknowledge them as
living blessings in our lives.
