Fishing industry news
The shrimp industry is the world's most traded marine commodity worth
almost US$12 billion a year and also among the most wasteful ones.
According to the UN "Over 60 percent of what is currently caught in
the global shrimp fishery is discarded, making it among the most
environmentally damaging in the world."
Wasting resources while supporting the inherent cruelties associated
to this industry is not good stewardship of God’s creation. While
Christian Vegetarians applaud efforts to decrease the waste related to
fishing, we recognize that a plant-based diet is the most effective
choice that at the same time honors God.
According to the following article, in order to try to minimize that
enormous destructiveness of the fishing industry, new nets for catching
shrimp are being introduced. These nets are thought to save up to 70%
unwanted extra catches by allowing bigger fish and turtles to exit the
nets through holes.
