Ben and Jerry’s cruelty exposed
Ben and Jerry’s US operation is under fire. The Humane Society of the
United States (HSUS) has criticized this company for buying eggs from
companies that mistreat hens (battery caged hens) for their US products.
However, Ben and Jerry’s uses cage-free eggs for its European products.
Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ltd. said in a statement released in London that
"While we're pleased to have been able to include free-range eggs in our
European ice cream, we've not yet found an economically manageable way
to do the same for our U.S. production." On the other hand, Wayne
Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS said, "The fact is, there is a
cage-free alternative that is available now, and Ben & Jerry's has no
excuses for offering up a pint of pain to tens of thousands of animals."
