Feelings
of Aloneness
By people of compassion
- The Church is Chasing People Away -
Response by Frank L. Hoffman
26 May 2001
Dear Friends:
This past Wednesday I attended a pastors meeting and presented Pat's letter of frustration and aloneness to them to see their response, which I expected to be a mixed bag. Instead they remained insensitive to her plight and said nothing.
When I questioned them on how they believe we should respond, one of the women pastors said is a somewhat angry tone, "There's no place in Methodist doctrine for believing that animals have immortal souls."
When I reminded them that the Bible says that both humans and animals are "living souls", a very wimpish male pastor said quietly, "He's right!" No one else responded and he kept quiet.
I then asked, "Are you at least open to the possibility of animals having souls, as I also believe they do?" Then this same woman said, "We go by the Book of Discipline, and there's nothing in there about animals having souls, and everyone except me agreed.
I was so angry and upset at their collective hardness of heart, it has taken me this long to write to you for your comments.
In another letter I tell you about some of the other things we talked about.
In the Love of the Lord,
Frank
