Christian Bowhunters of America
Is it really Christian?
Comment by Juli - 27 Jun 2007

Dear Susan,

As a friend recently reminded me, this world is a hard place to be for gentle people. And we people who value gentleness need all the more to make time for rest and peace in our lives, however we can find and create them. Otherwise, we'll be trampled by the hardness around us.

And I read soon after that ... I can't recall the source, and wish I could ... that if we give in to despair, if we put our focus too squarely on the horrors and evils of the world, and succumb to the emotional devastation they can cause, we're only paying tribute to the devil. So that makes it all the more incumbent upon us to keep our focus on the beautiful and the good in the world, to honor God instead. I liked the perspective that gave me in terms of struggling with my own heart-wrenching sadness in witnessing the terrible things in life.

It reminds me of one of my favorite scriptures, Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

I figure that instruction probably meant a lot more than simply to help us feel warm and toasty, not at all meaning that we should ignore the opposite of those things as if they don't exist. It seems we need to do the above as much as we can especially in these violent and tumultuous times. Just that simple thing may be part of job in service to God, to help hold the Light here where darkness runs so rampant.

Blessings,

Juli
