The "heart of darkness" term may not be the best description in the case of many humans as well as animals. Many human killings of other humans--homicides, suicides, etc.--appear to result just as much from problems in the head as in the heart.

Some people's conscience won't allow them to sit by and watch. That was a case with my husband in the tire iron incident. Almost anyone could have done what he or another guy did--things that drew the perpetrator's attention away from what he was doing.
