Fear of Dying
Comments by Frank L. Hoffman - 12 Dec 2004
Dear Friends:
In Steve Kaufman's essay "Christianity and the Problem of Human Violence, Part 26: The Fundamental Desire for Self-Esteem," which I have been enjoying very much, he begins with the statement:
"Those who survive episodes in which death seemed imminent describe the terror."
Back in 1957, while in the Air Force, I had a near death experience, but I had none of the fear or terror that Steve writes about. I knew what was happening. I could hear the people talking as they were trying to save my life. I heard one of the doctors say, "Come-on people, we're losing him!"
But even with all of this going on, there was no fear, and I don't even remember thinking about death.
There's a lot more to this story, but for now, I'm curious about anyone else who has had a near death experience, and about what you felt like while you were going through that experience. Was there fear and terror, or was there a peace, or was there something in between?
In the Love of the Lord,
Frank
