Faith and a green morality Sir, On the day that the Prince of Wales launches "Accounting for Sustainability", we add our voices to the calls for urgent attention to
and action on the environment. Research has shown that the future of our
planet is at risk from environmental destruction. We are consuming today
our children's tomorrow. There is no greater challenge for the present
generation than securing the future of the planet. As religious leaders from several different faiths, we can draw upon
the teachings on environmental conservation in all our traditions. This
is not just a matter of science, but about the moral obligations we have
to future generations. While there are no easy answers, the religious
voice provides a moral framework to address the issues of environmental
destruction and sustainability. We must act together - the faiths, politicians, business leaders and
the public - with an approach towards the environment characterised by
reverence and responsibility. DR ROWAN WILLIAMS CARDINAL CORMAC MURPHY-O'CONNOR SIR JONATHAN SACKS DR INDARJIT SINGH DR MUSHARRAF HUSSAIN ANIL BHANOT From The Times of Wednesday December 6, 2006 Return to Announcements |
