"The successes of the animal rights movement this year have proven
the power of 'ordinary people' and show what can be achieved by putting
the pressure on, lobbying, joining campaigns and standing up and
speaking out for what one believes in. Furthermore, every victory, large
or small, can renew us with fresh hope to continue the struggle for
justice and liberation for the innocents. As we all know, there is so
much more to do. At the Green Party Rally and 'Animate' Festival for
the Animals earlier this year, David Taylor of the Green Party said:
'Animal Rights is central to the Green view of the world. In the same
way that the ancient empire of Rome was dependent for its success on
human slavery, so our modern civilisation is built on the foundation of
animal abuse.' " "We need to match our words and deeds, and embrace all living things
with love, compassion, kindness and respect. Each one of us can make a
huge difference and the time is ripe to do so. We must accept
responsibility and act before it is too late: Come to the edge, he said. Guillaume Apollinaire Go on to 1998 - FoL Newsletter excerpts by Clare and Tom
