Sir - You published on April 28th a letter from a Spaniard claiming
that he was proud of being a Catholic and proud of enjoying bull-fights,
and asserting also that bull-fighting had nothing to do with religion. It would be more correct to say that bull-fighting - like every other
blood-sport - is incompatible with true religion and morality as it
means taking pleasure in the wanton infliction of pain and death on our
fellow creatures. Pope St. Pius V, in his Encyclical De salute gregis, 1567, described
bull-fighting as "a spectacle for demons rather than men" and
excommunicated all who took part in it. (Rev.) B. Wrighton The Universe Return to Letters |
