Sir - I wonder is Friday abstinence still kept in religious communities? As a vegetarian who "abstains" year in, year out, to do penance for the sin of cruelty to God's animals, I would wish for a return of at least Friday abstinence for penance which the sinful world needs very much. To be a vegetarian is regarded as "odd", "a crank" or "not all there". If we are resigned to all these names for the sake of God's animals, surely many could abstain on Fridays at least for all His sinful humans? Mary Hennon The Universe (16/9/83) Return to Letters |
