According to Robert Whelan, co-author of The Cross and the Rainforest, "animals do not have responsibilities and therefore do not have rights" (The Universe, July 6). Couldn't the exact same thing be said of the unborn or the mentally handicapped of our own species? We should be wary of moral meanness in our dealings with the rest of creation.
