Sir, If I may add something of a footnote to the recent debate about
the churches' role and reticence in relation to the interests of
animals. It is true that the overall record often lacks a capacity to inspire
'animal friendly' individuals and many Christians have received cold
comfort from clergy, in response to deeply held spiritual concerns, over
the years. However, the actual extent of humane theology, as expressed through
articles and letters in the Christian press, over recent decades, is
both inspirational and considerable. An extensive selection of archival coverage has been researched and
