Lambs to slaughter

I HAVE just returned from a few days in a pretty little country town, but the idyllic feel of the place was shattered as the first huge truck rumbled in. Altogether I observed eight four-tiered sheep transporters, two double-decker cattle trucks and a massive three-tiered pig trailer. Where were all these pitiful animals headed? Most likely to the ultimate terror of the slaughterhouse.

The pig trailer was parked near me while the driver bought lunch and for those 10 minutes the silence was shattered by the piercing screams of the frightened animals. It was heart-wrenching. These images and sounds of suffering brought home to me that meat is synonymous with cruelty.
