Letter to Weekend about Foie Gras
Dear Weekend:
I was very saddened and disheartened to read the column about Foie Gras
production by Mark Adams in your paper last week. It was a very insensitive view
of the process and totally inhumane practice of duck exploitation. This should
not be taken lightly as the title of the article suggests “What if I Cry?” I
feel that someone SHOULD cry for these ducks who cannot speak for themselves.
When you have a funnel down your throat, it is very difficult to cry!
I usually do enjoy reading Mr. Adams’ column even though I am a vegetarian
and many ideas of his I do not agree with. It is a sorry world to think that we
need to toughen up our human responses to the suffering of animals in order to
satisfy our greedy appetites either dietary or financial. Surely there are
alternatives to this cruel industry and thinking people who deserve to have
articles in your publication that are based on compassion rather than compliance
with insensitive and antiquated practices.
It is a shame that nobody cried. We need to examine this issue and look
within our conscience to understand this reaction and question this abuse of
animals.
Thank you for your attention!
