The mission of the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society, Inc. is to promote the vegetarian ethic in the Mid-Hudson Valley region of New York, educate the community, and aid anyone in the pursuit of a totally vegetarian (vegan) cruelty-free and healthful lifestyle.

Support our local Farm Sanctuaries!

Any donations made to Catskill Animal Sanctuary by December 31st, 2010 will be matched. Please consider donating to help CAS reach their goal. Visit www.casanctuary.org for more information. Also show your support to Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, consider sponsoring an animal or making a donation. Visit www.woodstockfas.org for more information.

The Ulster County SPCA is in dire need of the following items: Laundry detergent and bleach, Antibacterial dish soap, Paper towels, Brooms and mops, Heavy duty garbage bags, extra large Kitchen garbage bags 8 1/2 X 11, White bond paper, Kitty litter and more kitty litter (non clumping kind). Any of these items can be left at Roberta’s or Judi’s house or the office (call to set up a meeting time) and we will take them to the shelter.

Looking for fun activities to do with your kids? Come join the newly formed MHVS Youth Group! Meet new friends and participate in activities that will be fun for the whole family. Our upcoming Youth Group events are intended for kids and their parents. For more details visit our Youth Group Section.

We are now accepting recipes for the next edition of our MHVS cookbook! If you are interested in submitting a recipe for consideration, please visit our recipe submission section.

MHVS is currently looking for a treasurer. If you are interested (or someone you know) and would like more details, please call the office or contact us though our online form.

Vegetarian Resource Group
Tuesday, March 23rd 2010 ~ 7PM
MHVS offers a Vegetarian Support Group. It will be held at our Rhinebeck Office and is open to anyone wanting information about becoming vegetarian or vegan. We meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month in the evening at the office. Call for more info. Judi Gelardi and Luella Winne are the facilitators.

New York State's Humane Lobby Day
Wednesday, March 24th 2010 ~ 9:00am
Come and lobby with us on New York State's Humane Lobby Day at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Albany, NY. Youth Group Toys For Tails Activity
Saturday, March 27th 2010 ~ 1pm-3pm
Bring the kids and come make cat toys for the cats of some local animal shelters!  We will also be serving vegan snacks for the kids!  Location: Starr Library, 68 West Market Street, Rhinebeck, NY (downstairs community room).  Hope to see you there!

Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

We will participate in the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale. This can be done in multiple locations. Let us know if you and a friend want to hold one in your town.

Annual MHVS Meeting
Sunday, April 25th 2010 ~ Noon to 5PM
Our annual meeting at the Milan Town Hall. Marvin Lang will teach us how to make delicious vegan pizza. Many of us have been inspired by Rae Sikora at the Summerfest Conference, so we are bringing her here. She will inspire and motivate you. Board members will be sharing their delectable goodies. The MHVS Youth Group will provide activities for parents and their children from 12pm-1pm. $5 admission.

Women's Health Expo

We will have a table at the Women's Health Expo in Kingston.

Second Annual MHVS Gala

We will be holding our second annual Gala at Twin Lakes in Kingston. Check back for more details.

Veggie Pride Parade, NYC
Sunday, May 16th 2010 ~ 12 noon
Join us in marching in the third annual Veggie Pride Parade in New York City. Founded in 2008 by Pam Rice, the author of '101 Reason to Become Vegetarian', this parade gives us a chance to show our support and pride for the vegetarian lifestyle. A group of us will be carpooling down to the event. Call the office for more details.

Youth Group: Picnic For The Pigs Event
Saturday, May 22nd 2010 ~ TBA
The Youth Group will be taking a field trip to Catskill Animal Sanctuary in Saugerties, NY. The kids will make lunch with the sanctuary's new vegan chef Kevin Archer and follow with a tour given by the director and founder of the sanctuary, Kathy Stevens. Join us for some great vegan food, meet some wonderful farm animals, and have lots of fun! $5 admission fee per person/child to be given directly to the sanctuary.

Youth Group: Planting for the Planet

Bring the kids to do some planting and to learn how gardening helps the planet. President of MHVS, Judi Gelardi will discuss composting and how recycling our scraps can help the environment. Check back soon for more details.

Annual MHVS Picnic
Sunday, July 25th 2010 ~ 12 noon to 5:00pm
Bring the whole family and join us for our annual MHVS picnic. The picnic will be held at the Town of Ulster Robert E. Post Park Pavilion. Please bring a vegan dish to share, drinks, smart dogs, and watermelon will be provided. New this year we will also have some activities for the kids. More information to follow.

Family Fun Day at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary

Come join us at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. Enjoy a vegan picnic on the grounds and take a tour of the sanctuary. Meet some great farm animals and hear their stories from sanctuary co-founder Jenny Brown. COST: $5 per person/child to be given directly to the sanctuary. Check back soon for more details.

Walk For Farm Animals

To celebrate World Vegetarian Awareness Month we will be participating in a Walk For Farm Animals. We will be walking across the Kingston Railroad bridge with our banner to show our support for farm animals and the vegetarian lifestyle. The walk will conclude with a picnic. Volunteers are needed. Albany Vegetarian Expo
Saturday, October 2nd 2010 ~ TBA
We will once again have a booth at the annual Vegetarian Expo. The Expo is sponsored by the Albany Vegetarian Network, and will take place this year at the Empire State Plaza, in Albany, NY. Volunteers are needed to help man the booth. More info to follow.
