Never doubt that a small
group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the
only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

You can help the carriage horses. As a New Yorker
or a traveler to this great city, there are several things you can do to help
the horses:
1. Do not take carriage rides and tell your
friends and family to do the same.
2. Educate people about this issue. There is a
lot of information on this web site share it with friends and family.
3. Familiarize yourself with the existing
legislation that regulates this industry i.e. learn how many people are allowed
to ride in a carriage; what streets horse carriages are restricted to and for
which days and hours; the temperatures at which the horses are allowed to work.
4. If you see an obvious violation or animal
cruelty call the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department at 212-876-7700 x
4450. Or e-mail them at
enforcement@aspca.org Provide the time the
incident occurred; the location; carriage license (at rear of carriage);
description of the horse. If you speak with someone, get their name and ask for
a report as to how the incident was resolved. If you leave a message on their
voice mail; leave your contact information and ask for a call back.
I sent an e-mail to the ASPCA describing a
problem - with all corresponding required information. I received this
canned e-mail as a response.
"Dear [my name] Thank you for you email dated
June 13, 2006. We at the ASPCA share your sense of concern about all
instances of animal abuse. If you live in New York City, please call the
Humane Law Enforcement Division at (212) 876-7700 X4450. Our business hours
are Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm and our agent's also work on the
weekends.
If you live outside New York City, to receive
the most efficient service and attention to your complaint, we suggest that
you contact your local SPCA or Humane Society. We truly appreciate your
concern and efforts on behalf of the welfare of animals and hope that you
have found this information helpful.
Sincerely,

6. If you do not live in New York City, please
contact Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and ask him to use his influence and power to
ban the carriage horse industry in New York City. You can call 311 to leave a
message or you can send an
e-mail
If you are a New Yorker, please contact Mayor
Bloomberg as indicated above and also contact your
Council Member
