CARRIAGE HORSES

Photo: Susan Brandt - Rational Animal
The Carriage horse industry is an anachronism
straight out of the 19th century but it continues in the most congested city
in the US because of political connections. Many tourists and most New Yorkers
are pained to see these horses lined up on Central Park South waiting for the
next fare so they avoid the area. The horses spend their days pounding the
hard pavement dragging cabs full of unaware tourists who think taking a
carriage ride is romantic and glamorous. They often do not even acknowledge
the horse, who just finished pulling them around the crowded streets, as they
pose for their picture to be taken. The horses are subjected to a grueling and
dangerous life on the street every day living a nose to tailpipe existence -
breathing in exhaust fumes. Their down time is spent in stuffy stables
many so small the horses cannot turn around. They have no opportunity for
turnout.
We hope that the information on this web site
will provide you with facts about this industry and the horses who work in it
to encourage you to take action to call the mayors office if you are a
tourist or to contact your council member and the mayor if a New Yorker to
ask them to once and for all close down this very cruel and archaic industry.
