Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 01
(Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 01)  This spring (2002), we spotted this gray squirrel feeding on some of last autumn's fallen acorns.  Even though the squirrel knew of our presence, he or she continued searching for food and eating, which allowed us to take these pictures.

(Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 02)  As we continued to watch, this gray squirrel found an acorn and began eating breakfast.  Perhaps, one day, when we truly learn what it means to be filled with the knowledge of the Lord , and no longer hurt or destroy (Isaiah 11:9) any of God's living beings (human or non-human), we may eat our breakfast together with squirrels like this one in mutual loving kindness.

(Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 03)  Every time we watch a gray squirrel peacefully living his or her life as God intended, we recall a story a pastor told at a party.  He was out hunting with some friends when a gray squirrel ran across his path and up a nearby tree.  He aimed his shotgun and fired.  He started laughing, and said that all that was left of the squirrel was its tail flopping in the breeze from the bark of the tree.  How such an insensitive and evil man could have ever become a pastor is beyond our comprehension, for all he succeeded in doing was blaspheming God and His creation.  To take joy in killing is premeditated murder!

(Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 04)  It was as if this gray squirrel knew what we were thinking, for he or she turned toward us, as if to say, "It's ok!  I know you won't harm me."
Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 05
(Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciuridae carolinensis) - 05)  As this gray squirrel returned to searching for more acorns, we said, "Good morning!" and went about our business, too. God gave us a companion when He created this gray squirrel; and just seeing him or her in the fullness of life brings forth a prayer of thankfulness and the request that the Lord return quickly to put an end to all the pain and suffering in this world.

The following series of photos of an eastern gray squirrel were taken in the Spring of 2004. The squirrel found the deck to be an easy place to find and dine upon fallen white pine and other tree seeds.

Lamb - Right Lamb - Left Presented here are just a few of the countless components of God's creation.  Just as we cannot have human and animal life without water and plants, neither can we have lasting peace without love and compassion.  It is our hope and prayer that this series will motivate people to live and act in a cruelty-free manner; that we would no longer hurt or destroy each other, the animals or our environment.
