Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 01
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 01) The flower of the blue-eyed grass is only about 1 cm., or less than 1/2 inch in diameter, but it makes a striking contrast against the green grass-like leaves of this wildflower.  Blue-eyed grass is a member of the Iris family.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 02
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 02) At a casual glance blue-eyed grass looks very much like coarse grass, and most often we won't recognize it until it forms buds and flowers, or as in this photo, it develops seed pods.  The literature says that blue-eyed grass can grow as high as two feet, but most of the ones we encounter are not over 6 to 8 inches high.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 03
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 03) The literature says that blue-eyed grass has a 6-petal flower, and we have found no mention of this 5-petaled variety.  Flowers bloom for only one day, and are replaced with a new crop the following day.  Finding this unusual variety is all part of enjoying the beauty of God's creation.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 04
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 04) This is a photo of the normal variety of blue-eyes grass.  Note the 6-petal flowers.   The natural beauty of God's creation is all around us, if we simply take to time to notice and appreciate it.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 05
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 05) One of the interesting characteristics of the blue-eyed grass is the "hairy" underside of the flower petals, some of which can be quite long as seen in the bottom of the the photo.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 06
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 06)  We have blue-eyed grass growing in two of our planter boxes on the edge of our deck, but usually only a few are blooming at any one time.  In mid May of 2006, to our delight, they all seemed to be blooming at once.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 07
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 07)  On the terminal end of of the blue-eyed grass flower stem the buds develop, burst into bloom for a single day, shrivel and dry up, and leave behind swelling seed pods to propagate the species.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 08
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 08)  The beauty of the blue-eyed grass flower shines forth from the tips of the green stems.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 09
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 09)  This is another look at a blue-eyed grass flower.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 10
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 10)  This is another look at the blooming blue-eyed grass.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 11
(Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) - 11)  The scalloped leaves to the upper left of the blue-eyed grass are short-spur columbine, which were also beginning to bloom.

lamb-right lamb-left Presented here are just a few of the countless components of God's creation.  Just as we cannot have human and animal life without water and plants, neither can we have lasting peace without love and compassion.  It is our hope and prayer that this series will motivate people to live and act in a cruelty-free manner; that we would no longer hurt or destroy each other, the animals or our environment.
