Our Final Quiet Time
By John D. Coutts

It’s our final quiet time together,
she sits on my knees.
I look into her brown eyes,
all I see is unconditional love.

My heart fills with mutual admiration
as I lovingly stroke her shiny coat.
She snuggles closer and licks my ear,
I kiss her nose, this makes her smile,
her beautiful smile, a model for joy.

A sense of enduring love overwhelms me
as she peacefully falls into final sleep.

A torrent of tears pours from my eyes
as I look down at my loyal friend,
my shadow,
my responsibility,
my precious gift,
my dog.
