Frost
By John Cannon

The first frost
lies
like a giant spider web
across our lower field,

It reaches out
to every sheaf of grass
and nothing escapes
its icy fingers.

For just moments
the rising sun
bounces off
each frozen droplet

and the whole field
shimmers
with an iridescent
silver aura.

But here in early fall
the sun’s power
is still strong

and so quickly
the crystals melt
and green prevails again.

Just a lovely
ephemeral messenger,
briefly stopping by,

bringing the first glimpse
of winter’s
inexorable
approach.
