Kinship
By John Cannon

I am so blessed
to live among hawks,

It’s second nature now,
an unconscious habit,
to track a hawk’s flight
whenever I’m outdoors,

It’s as natural
as sensing the movements
of someone
you’ve lived with for years,

An immediate awareness
of presence,
and the feelings
that attach to that intimacy;

The slightest movement
of a hawk in the air
draws my eyes automatically,

And with instant recognition
comes a joyous feeling
of kinship.
