New Year's Day
By John Cannon

Even as we
hunker down
for winter’s trials,
the wildlife know
it’s all
new beginnings
from here on.
Unnoticed by most of us
the sun lingers
a few more moments
every day
from now ‘til June.
In microscopic
increments
the tree buds
begin to swell,
nourishing
the tiny beginnings
of new branches,
leaves and flowers,
signaling
their inherent faith
that out of darkness
comes more light,
that quiet patience
is rewarded,
that Mother Nature
never lets us down,
that rejuvenation
is not just possible,
it is
the fundamental
imperative of life.
