About the Author
I have just turned 63 on November 10th 2006 and have loved animals all of my life. I am a white female of Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Jewish ancestry. My great, great Uncle was Jay Gould (changed from Gold) and through my Scottish line I have Rob Roy MacGregor and Robert Burns in my line; also Nathanal Greene. In my Welsh line the first Prince of Wales. My great, great grandmother wrote poetry and would recite them once a year in Constitutional Hall along with her poetry group. Photo: Linda and Shandi
I lived for a while on my Irish grandfather's farm in York County, Va. and learned to love animals as he did. My favorite was his horses, but as the years went by I also found I loved all animals equally. I see our earth and it's living things as one and I see mankind included in importance to the whole, but not above any one life form. All life is one. All life is precious to me. Not one over another.
We need to take care of our earth and her life forms or we will share their fate, I feel. In the mid '70's, I began writing to our legislators asking them to pass bills into law that would protect our wildlife and pets from cruelty and slaughter for fun and profit. I belong to the Humane Society of the U.S., The ASPCA, the Committee to Abolish Sport Hunting, The Fund for Animals, and to the Native American Rights Fund. I most of all hate hunting and often write editorials to our local letters here in Virginia where I live outlining what hunting is all about and how it hurts all life and not just those animals hunted.
At one point, I have had 30 of my poems published in our local paper, The Daily Press, Inc. and one time they actually put one of my poems on one whole page which I have framed in my living room.
I have three cats, two of which are Siamese. I also have a pet goose who brought me about 50 wild Canada geese who come to eat my corn each day and are protected from any harm while they are here at our home. I have a lone seagull who comes each day in the winter months and waits for some bread to eat. So dear....and we also have deer at times who come for our apples on the tree. We have raccoon and possum as well. Bald eagles land in our trees to rest or eat their fish they caught in the creek out back behind our home. I have had buzzards even land in our yard. They are all welcome...even the little black snakes and the puff adder....the Luna moth and the bunnies.
I have two children, a boy and a girl from my late husband who died in a plane crash in 1980. It was the plane at fault. He was only 35. I remarried two and a half years later to a man who used to fly with him.
My son is a Deputy Sheriff and my daughter is a veterinarian.
I paint pictures and love to sing and write poetry. I love people and see God in each living being! I love to learn about everything and have an open mind.
I pray for peace for all the earth and all life living and find it all beautiful and precious!
