Scientists Criticize Vanderbilt Primate Research As Unethical
MetroSource News

TN - Vandy Research
(Nashville, TN) -- Three highly-respected scientists say primate
research
at Vanderbilt University is unethical and distressful to research
subjects.
Researchers there routinely deprive rhesus monkeys of water,
confine them to restraint chairs and bolt devices to their skulls,
according
to watchdog organizations.
Veterinarian Dr. Bruce Max Feldman with the
University of California-Berkeley says using restraint chairs on
primates is
one of the most stressful things that can be done to the animals.
Tufts
University Animal Behavior Clinic Director Dr. Nicholas Dodman adds that
withholding water for up to 22 hours a day for five days a week to
motivate
monkeys is unconscionable.
Cincinnati-based watchdog group "Stop Animal
Exploitation Now" Executive Director Michael Budkie says his group has
demanded meetings with Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos and
requested a
tour of the school's animal research laboratories.
