Rescued Bunnies' Stories

From AAM Animal Activism Mentorship
November 2022

Uno who was rescued back in March over Easter weekend at an AAM action at a live market. Activists saw a little bunny with a missing ear crammed in a wire cage with chickens. Their hearts broke as they pleaded for his life. After hours of relentless negotiating, an employee grabbed the bunny by his only ear, pulled him out of the cage, and shoved him into a cardboard box.

His life had been spared.

Rabbit Uno
Uno and his human...

One of the activists who had pleaded for his life took him home and never looked back. With a new home and a new name, Uno now lives with his caregiver Annette and her family.

“He is doing amazing!” says Annette. “Fully neutered and vaccinated. He is spoiled, loves to cuddle. [He] won't let me pick him up, [but] will let me cuddle with him on the floor. He loves his pellets and treats. He is great with my 2 year old niece. He is the best bun in the world.”

Uno was not the only bunny rescued this year. AAM mentee Christy jumped into action when her mentor alerted her of an "aggressive" rabbit on death row in her hometown. “My mentor sent me a text that she had found out about through the group on Facebook. Long story short I had the time and the gas and I knew a bunny lover so I went and got her after I told Greta about it and the story about the bunny.”

I reached out to Honey Bunny’s new caregiver, Greta, to see how she’s adjusting to her new home.
“It’s been a month and she’s still a little aggressive! She is very adorable and will let you pet her and hold her and we have fallen in love with her, especially my mini poodle Hamilton! He is in love with her and it is very precious! My daughter really loves how cute she is and the adorable mohawk on the top of her head and when she’s fixed and less aggressive I know they will have a special bond!”

If you’ve been following AAM for the last few months, then you know about our Ohio Occurrence. You may also know that an abandoned, domesticated rabbit was found in the neighborhood the activists were staying in for the event. This bunny was lucky enough that one of the attending activists was ready and willing to share her home with him for good.

I checked in with Mel to see how the bunny was adjusting to his new home.

Rabbit Cleveland

"Cleveland is a really good bunny." After the vet gave him a clean bill of health, Cleveland made himself right at home, making fast friends with the family's Guinea Pig.

"He's litter trained...just under a year old...we really are very happy to have him."
