The Call To Be Someone To Somebody: The Dance of Life Article Series
By Dr. Joyce at The Caring Heart from Spokane Washington

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and It giveth light unto all that are in the house.”

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matt. 14:16)

No Room For Passivity! Simply passing the hours watching TV or doodling around on the computer does not “cut it.” In a culture in which so many are distrusting, aloof, reserved, hard to get to know, and etcetera, people who have Jesus’ real spirit in them, and who exhibit that by being sociable, interested, relaxed but energetic, responsive, and initiating are sorely needed to BE SOMEONE TO SOMEBODY.

Actually, there are many, many “somebodys” out there! In the first place, Our Father is the incredibly awesome, most important Somebody who dearly desires us to act as His very real children and DO OUR JOBS to worship Him, love Him, and obey Him by being holy and loving others. Then, there are incredible numbers of human “somebodys” to relate to, nurture, shine our lights around, and help uplift – family, friends, co-workers, fellow church members, checkers at stores, on and on. And don’t forget our animal brothers and sisters who are in our care. No dog likes to be ignored day after day, but wants happy involvement with his or her beloved caregiver. No horse wants to stand alone in a field month after month, but wants meaningful interaction with his or her owner, and wants a job to do. He wants to feel valued.

EVERY TIME we are near a fellow being, human or animal, we have an opportunity to serve God and that other being, by putting our whole selves, our best selves, unreservedly, into a quality, warm, genuine interaction. EVERY TIME we are thusly helping His Kingdom to come on earth. EVERY TIME we are kindly and lovingly doing the will of our Father, the biggest SOMEBODY of all!!

Of course, wisdom and caution are in order here. To expose ourselves, and make ourselves vulnerable to strangers who may be evil, dishonest, manipulatory, or otherwise dangerous to us in any way, would just be foolhardy. So, although we can still be very friendly to strangers, we need to use wisdom in getting involved.

There is so much to do in the area of letting our lights shine! We need to push farther aside our preoccupations with finances, material things, entertainments, and whatever else distracts us, and put our focus on LOVING. We will be the more richly blessed, too.
