This year, Harlem Week actually stretches from August 1
- Aug. 15.
www.harlemdiscover.com .
This is a popular event in NYC, featuring cultural, health, sports, career
recruitment and other booths and exhibits.
On August 14 and 15 the 'Children's Festival' will
feature a petting zoo, along with dance troops, theater, poetry, hip hop and
super heros from comic books. An estimated 30,000
family members will attend this event.
Please write polite letters to the organizers of this
event, asking them to reconsider bringing in a petting zoo; there is
overwhelming evidence of trauma to these animals, who are brought in crowded
trucks, frequently without food and water so they don't 'make a mess;' they
are poked, prodded, kicked; veterinarians have reported smaller animals
being crushed underfoot by larger, frightened and agitated animals. It is
also a human health hazard.
*NOTE: if I thought there were the remotest evidence
that the children learn or 'make the connection' at these petting zoos, I'd
reconsider; there is none. At Stew Leonards Market, the petting zoo is right
next to the hamburger stand, which is always crowded.
We might be able to make inroads with this; the person
who informed me of it hadn't thought about it till I mentioned my concerns
about the Black rodeo to her, regarding another event. She came to me the
next day with the above three-page info, and pointed to the petting zoo.
Demo, anyone? When we demo'd the petting zoo at Amodio's Garden Center, we
got excellent press.

materials, food, etc., also contact the same persons listed below.
