Traveling Animal Acts

1 August 2004

Local press is poised to cover the meeting being arranged with the Westchester Board of Legislators, regarding traveling animal acts. The tiger incident, coupled with still-fresh Roy Horn, might make ordinances write themselves; but circuses are multi-million dollar a year businesses and will not go down without a fight.

As I see it the major resistance areas in Westchester will be White Plains (Hanneford), Mt. Vernon, who stopped rodeos but are hesitant to 'officially' stop animal-user circuses, and Yonkers - the new Mayor vowed to bring in an animal-user circus, though perhaps the appearance of the Moscow Circus will bode well (more one this shortly). All these venues, including Westchester County, have been served with a NOTICE OF DANGEROUS CONDITION regarding traveling animal acts, as well. Two years ago the Hanneford Circus tried to sneak elephants infected with tuberculosis past inspections.
