Maxim is a popular monthly magazine that targets
average to upscale 18 - 40 year old men. This is NOT a hunting magazine and
it is available on any newsstand. The following hunting article ran in the
June, 2004 issue. Response is still timely, as it's a monthly. I called the
managing editor today in her NY office.
(This is very strong stuff).
Title: BUFFALO WINGMEN
(excerpts):
"You've never really hunted until you've held a
still-warm buffalo heart and eaten its liver raw."
(under a photo of a man spreading a dead buffalo's hind
legs, with a 'humorous' caption BUFFALO PORN):
"He slits her neck, letting the blood flow over the
ground. We each grab a leg and stretch out her limbs while Rideshorse pulls
out a 10-inch knife and cuts down the center of her groin. Splitting the
body up the middle, he tugs her insides out like a magic trick and drags the
stomach aside."
With a photo of the reporter eviscerating the animal:
"He offers us slices of raw buffalo liver - thank God Buffalo is
Atkins-friendly!"
SIDEBAR: Five other beasts you can shoot, skin, and
serve at your next BBQ...without leaving the continent!
(They then list species such as polar bear, mountain
lion, all with repulsive captions such as: ARCTIC WOLF - Prefer your hunting
doggy style?)
Considering (apart from the fact it teaches cruelty to
young men) the misogynistic tone of the text, I was shocked to see the
magazine has a female managing editor. She laughed during our conversation,
and denied the misogyny, saying the animal was female - though the text
begins calling the animal 'it.' She also said it was just reporting - it
wasn't; it was extremely slanted.

Laura Silverman at (212) 302-2626 and ask her if this is the best message
they can send to young men.
