Action Alerts Protest Elks Magazine Rodeo Article PLEASE CROSSPOST WIDELY!! From: Sandra Kantor
[email protected] The Elks Magazine is an icon, my parents, uncles are members, but I won't
carry on the tradition after this barbaric article is taken so lightly. WEBSITE: www.elks.org/elksmag/ Feb 2006 article on 'The Sheridan, Wyoming, Elks Youth Rodeo Rides Again.
The rodeo was AUG 27-28, 2005. The magazine is condoning the rodeo on 5 pages. Includes: -Picture of 5 yr old girl with whip handy just in case her horse shows
signs of slackening the pace in a riding contest. -Another Sentence: Slowly a river of calves snaked into view. The calves
didn't know what was about to happen, but the youngsters did. -Horrible picture of a 16 yr old boy (goat-tying); says dismounts from
horse while the horse is still moving, catch the goat, flip it onto its
side, and rope any three legs together. The goat is tiny. The boy is big.
-There is no bull riding, no bronc riding, no steer wresting. Continues with True Grit: Speed is essential, but so are accuracy, agility, strength, and control.
In livestock events, contestants must be able to ride, rope and throw an
animal (in this rodeo..a goat) to the ground. Two 16 year old boys bear down on a steer. One does the horns, the other
ropes the back legs. Calf ropes are made of stiff nylon, making gloves essential equipment at
the rodeo. One more thing: What spectators won't see are "rough stock" events that
involve untamed or unbroken animals. What a horrible message to send out that it is OK for children to do
this. The poor animals are trusting. I am so disgusted with the Elks. They report this cruelty like the kids
are at Disney Land. PLEASE SEND EMAILS TO: Re: The Sheridan, Wyoming, Elks Youth Rodeo Rides Again.. E-Mail: General comments and questions:
